Cookie Policy

What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They're widely used to make sites work, to remember your preferences, and to give site owners information about how their site is being used.
This policy explains which cookies we use, what they do, and how you can control them. It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy.
We also use similar technologies such as pixels and local storage. Where we refer to cookies in this policy, we mean these too.
How we use cookies
We group the cookies on our site into three categories.
Strictly necessary
These are needed for the website to function and to keep it secure. They can't be switched off. They include cookies that protect our contact forms against automated abuse, cookies that help our hosting provider serve pages efficiently, and cookies set when a member of our team logs in to manage the site.
We do not need your consent for these, but we tell you about them here.
Analytics
These help us understand how visitors use our site — which pages are viewed, how people arrive, and where they run into difficulty. We use this to improve the site.
We use two analytics services:
- Google Analytics, provided by Google, which tells us how many people visit, which pages they view, and how they found us.
- Microsoft Clarity, provided by Microsoft, which records how visitors interact with pages — mouse movement, scrolling, clicks — and produces heatmaps and session recordings. This helps us see where a page is confusing or difficult to use.
Clarity's recordings are configured to mask what you type. We do not use it to read the contents of our enquiry form.
We only set these cookies if you agree.
Marketing
These are used to measure the effectiveness of our advertising and, in some cases, to show you our advertising on other websites. They may be set by third parties, including Google and Microsoft, who may use the information for their own purposes as well as ours.
We only set these cookies if you agree.
The cookies we use
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Type | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|---|
__cf_bm | Cloudflare | Distinguishes human visitors from automated traffic, protecting our enquiry form | Strictly necessary | 30 minutes |
cf_clearance | Cloudflare | Records that a visitor has passed a security check | Strictly necessary | [VERIFY] |
wordpress_test_cookie | Our website | Checks whether your browser accepts cookies | Strictly necessary | Session |
wordpress_logged_in_* | Our website | Keeps a member of our team signed in when managing the site — not set for ordinary visitors | Strictly necessary | Session |
wpe-auth | WP Engine | Used by our hosting provider | Strictly necessary | [VERIFY] |
wphb-* | Our website | Supports page caching so the site loads quickly | Strictly necessary | [VERIFY] |
_ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes one visitor from another by assigning a randomly generated identifier | Analytics | 2 years* |
_ga_<container-id> | Google Analytics | Maintains session state, so multiple page views are recognised as one visit | Analytics | 2 years* |
_gid | Google Analytics | Distinguishes visitors, where present | Analytics | 24 hours |
_gat / _dc_gtm_<id> | Google Analytics | Limits the rate at which data is sent, so the site isn't slowed down | Analytics | 1–10 minutes |
_clck | Microsoft Clarity | Stores a Clarity user ID for this site, so return visits are recognised as the same visitor | Analytics | 1 year |
_clsk | Microsoft Clarity | Groups multiple page views into a single session recording | Analytics | 1 day |
CLID | Microsoft Clarity | Identifies the first time Clarity encountered this visitor on any site using Clarity | Analytics (third-party) | 1 year |
_gcl_au | Records ad clicks and links them to conversions, measuring advertising performance | Marketing | 90 days | |
MUID | Microsoft | Identifies a browser across Microsoft sites; used by Microsoft for advertising, analytics and operational purposes | Marketing (third-party) | ~13 months |
MR | Microsoft | Indicates whether the MUID cookie should be refreshed | Marketing (third-party) | 7 days |
ANONCHK | Microsoft | Checks whether MUID is passed to an advertising cookie. Clarity always sets this to 0 | Marketing (third-party) | 10 minutes |
SM | Microsoft | Synchronises the MUID cookie across Microsoft domains | Marketing (third-party) | Session |
* Google sets _ga and _ga_<container-id> with a two-year expiry, but most browsers now cap first-party cookies at around 400 days, and Safari at seven days.
Session recording
Microsoft Clarity records how visitors move around our pages — where the cursor goes, what gets clicked, how far down a page someone scrolls. These recordings are played back as anonymous sessions and are used to improve the design of the site.
Clarity is configured to mask text input by default, so what you type into our enquiry form is not captured. We do not use these recordings to identify individual visitors.
If you would prefer not to be recorded, decline analytics cookies and no recording will take place.
